Newark Valley Invitational

Newark Valley Invitational
Alyson Witt

This past Saturday, Homer’s Varsity Track and Field Team  traveled to Newark Valley to represent Homer High School in an invitational. Not only was talent, but also teamwork and camaraderie were put to the test. Here, weeks of hard training and vigorous practices paid off as the team was successful despite some bumps in the road, including the weather which included rain, hail and wind. The team overcame these obstacles and dominated the track.  Although not all members of the team attended the meet, Homer was able to bring many athletes, put its best foot forward, and prove what they are made of.
The boys team was very successful, especially the members of the 4x400 relay team, which consists of Logan Grihin, Grant Stoke, Paddy Fox and Matt Guerrera, who took first place. Homer also won second in the boys 4x100 relay thanks to Logan Grihin, Christian Pittsley, Paddy Fox and Michael Morse. Homer boys also scored points in individual events such as the mile, where sophomore Grant Stoke won 4th place with a time of 4:47. The girls team also proved themselves, scoring points in both relays and as individual competitors. Senior McKayla Crawford took 3rd place in the 1500m with a time of 5:11, and also took second in the 3000m with a time of 11:23. The girls 4x100 took second place thanks to the hard work and teamwork put in by Kelsey Clark, Brenna Johnson, Alasasce Sanders and Arielle Mohemini.
The team still has a long season ahead of them and plans to only improve from here. Putting in many miles, practicing handoffs, and building trust in the teammates. The team competes again on April 4th against Oswego and Fulton High School at Oswego Middle School, come cheer them on and wish them luck!

International Club: Recipe Project

International Club: Recipe Project

Molly Burhans

Homer High School's International Club is always providing fun ways to learn about other cultures. Recently, a group of club members went to Ichiban in order to experience Japanese food and culture. They have now planned another impressive project, a cultural recipe book. All club members and anyone else who is interested was encouraged to bring in recipes from their culture or a culture that they are interested in. Once all recipes were turned in on April 13th, the club started to compile them into recipe books. Anyone who wants a book is welcome to grab one, but the real treat is on April 20th when everyone makes a dish from their chosen culture. Everyone is invited to this special event, and it will be yet another success for this great club. Make sure to come experience the culture, and look for future events by the Homer International Club!

Youth and Government Wrap-up

Youth and Government Wrap-up
Molly Burhans

Another fantastic year of Youth and Government has come to an end, and with this end came a new leadership team, both at the state and district levels. Our Governor, Andrew Jacobi, has passed on the incredible responsibility of being Governor to an excellent candidate, A.G. Chancellor IV, from District 7. Kennedy George, our Public Defender has also handed her position to Kayla Guarino from District 7. At the district level, we have a brand new leadership team with Chris Delage as President, Anna Gugerty as Vice President, Beth Gilbert as Secretary, and Matthew Pelowski as Treasurer. These bright, young leaders will do an exceptional job in making sure that the 2016-2017 year runs smoothly.

This year, overall, has been an amazing success. We had a great group of students involved in the club, as well as an outstanding leadership team. In the legislative branch, we had many top-notch bills that were all written correctly, as opposed to bills from other districts. Our Governor did a great job passing and vetoing bills but unfortunately, couldn’t pass some great bills because they were not written correctly. Judicial had immense success this year with every attorney winning their case, and Public Defender, Kennedy George, winning her case. We were also very lucky to have four phenomenal Justices: Beth Gilbert, Joey Esposito, Nina Armideo, and Tighe Gugerty, who was Principal Justice for our district. We also had three delegates from the conference invited to attend CONA: Jordan Laundry, Andrew Jacobi, and Chris Delage. This year was another great success for both District 6, and Youth and Government as a whole.
