Newark Valley Invitational
Alyson Witt
This past Saturday, Homer’s Varsity Track and Field Team traveled to Newark Valley to represent Homer High School in an invitational. Not only was talent, but also teamwork and camaraderie were put to the test. Here, weeks of hard training and vigorous practices paid off as the team was successful despite some bumps in the road, including the weather which included rain, hail and wind. The team overcame these obstacles and dominated the track. Although not all members of the team attended the meet, Homer was able to bring many athletes, put its best foot forward, and prove what they are made of.
The boys team was very successful, especially the members of the 4x400 relay team, which consists of Logan Grihin, Grant Stoke, Paddy Fox and Matt Guerrera, who took first place. Homer also won second in the boys 4x100 relay thanks to Logan Grihin, Christian Pittsley, Paddy Fox and Michael Morse. Homer boys also scored points in individual events such as the mile, where sophomore Grant Stoke won 4th place with a time of 4:47. The girls team also proved themselves, scoring points in both relays and as individual competitors. Senior McKayla Crawford took 3rd place in the 1500m with a time of 5:11, and also took second in the 3000m with a time of 11:23. The girls 4x100 took second place thanks to the hard work and teamwork put in by Kelsey Clark, Brenna Johnson, Alasasce Sanders and Arielle Mohemini.
The team still has a long season ahead of them and plans to only improve from here. Putting in many miles, practicing handoffs, and building trust in the teammates. The team competes again on April 4th against Oswego and Fulton High School at Oswego Middle School, come cheer them on and wish them luck!
